About The King Of The Ring
The first King Of The Ring event took place in 1985. Back then, it was just known as a tournament. It was no real big deal, tournaments were a big thing back in the 1980s. However in 1993, all that changed. The King Of The Ring became a televised event and it was shown on Pay-Per-View. The winner would receive a crown, robe, and sceptor for a job well done. To be king was demanding. They would have to fight three times in one night, or if they were fortunate, only twice. The rewards are great. Not only would they become king for the year, but they also receive a WWF Title shot.

Steve Austin (across on the left side) is the 1996 King Of The Ring.
Steve Austin qualified for the 1996 King Of The Ring tournament after he defeated Bob Holly. At the quarterfinal round, he defeated Savio Vega. Then at the semfinal round of the tournament shown at King Of The Ring, he finished off Marc Mero. In the final round, he took on a weary and injured Jake "Snake" Roberts. Austin defeated Roberts a few minutes later, and became the 1996 King Of The Ring.

Aftermath
As I stated earlier, those who won the King Of The Ring tournament went on to better things and most of them received WWF Title shots. You will now see the King Of The Ring winners and what they went on to do:

1. Bret "Hitman" Hart (1993 King Of The Ring) competed in the 1994 Royal Rumble and co-won the rumble with Lex Luger. That allowed him to get a WWF Title shot at Wrestlemania 10. In the second main event at Wrestlemania 10, he defeated the late
Yokozuna and regained the WWF Title.

2. Owen Hart (1994 King Of The Ring) went on to Summerslam 7 in August of 1994 to face his brother
Bret "Hitman" Hart in a Steel Cage Match for the WWF Title. Although he lost the match, he still gained success. He eventually became a co-holder of the Tag Team Titles six times. He also won the IC Title twice and the European Title once.

3. Mabel (1995 King Of The Ring) received a WWF Title shot at Summerslam 8 in August of 1995. Unfortunately, he lost the match to Diesel and failed to win the WWF Title. After 1995, Mabel didn't accomplish anything else.

4. Steve Austin (1996 King Of The Ring) didn't receive a WWF Title shot in 1996. However, in 1997, he won the Royal Rumble, the IC Title twice, and was a co-holder of the Tag Team Titles twice. 1998 was his year. He won the 1998 Royal Rumble and then won the WWF Title twice that year He was also a co-holder of the Tag Team Titles once. Within the years that follwed, he won the WWF Title four more times and was a co-holder of the Tag Team Titles.

5. Hunter Hearst Helmsley (1997 King Of The Ring) eventually became the IC Champion in 1997. In 1998, he won the European Title and then went on to win the IC Title a second time. He shined in 1999 as Triple H. He won the WWF Title twice. By 2000, he was a four-time WWF Champion. In 2001, he became a four-time IC Champion. Most recently in 2002, he made his return to the WWF and won the Royal Rumble.

6. Ken Shamrock (1998 King Of The Ring) never was able to win the WWF Title. However, he was an IC Champion at one time in 1998 and a few months later, he was a co-holder of the Tag Team Titles.

7. Billy Gunn (1999 King Of The Ring) never competed for the WWF Title. His only other main accomplishment was winning the IC Title in late-2000 and holding the IC Title for a few weeks. Other that that, he didn't accomplish much else.

8. Kurt Angle (2000 King Of The Ring) enjoyed 2000. Before he was the King, he held the IC Title and the European Title. At "No Mercy" in October of 2000, he defeated The Rock for the WWF Title. Within the years to follow, he won the WWF Title again and is still a top star to this day.

9. Edge (2001 King Of The Ring) didn't compete for the WWF Title. Instead, he won the IC Title twice.
His other main accomplishment was becoming the only wrestler in history to win the Tag Team Titles six times with the same tag team partner (Christian). He is still a top contender for the IC Title.

Kurt Angle (shown below) is the 2000 King Of The Ring.
The 2000 King Of The Ring tournament was the longest tournament. There was a qualifying round, a first round, a quarterfinal round, a semifinal round, and then the final round. The qualifying and first rounds were not on the day of the King Of The Ring PPV.

Kurt Angle qualified after he defeated Bradshaw. Then, he defeated Buh-Buh Ray Dudley to make it to the quarterfinal round at the King Of The Ring tournament. He had to win three more times at the tournament, but he was up to it.

At the quaterfinal round, he defeated Chris Jericho. The semifinal round wasn't a very tough match as he defeated Crash Holly. Even though he had to battle Rikishi in the final round, he succeeded. He defeated Rikishi and became the 2000 King Of The Ring.

Triple H (shown above) is the 1997 King Of The Ring.
Triple H was known as Hunter Hearst Helmsley in 1997. Although he lost to Ahmed Johnson in a qualifying match, he re-entered as a substitution and qualified for the tournament.

In the first round, he defeated Crush. At the semifinal round shown on the King Of The Ring PPV, he got vengeance and defeated Ahmed Johnson. The final round was challenging since he battled Mankind. Although Mankind was tough, Hunter Hearst Helmsley was tougher on that day. When it was all said and done, Helmsley became the 1997 King Of The Ring.

Billy Gunn (shown below) is the 1999 King Of The Ring.
Not everyone thought Billy Gunn would win the 1999 King Of The Ring tournament. It wasn't believed he would even qualify. The road had a bunch of bumps, but he rode by them.

He defeated the massive Viscera to qualify. The King Of The Ring tournament wasn't any easier. He got by Ken Shamrock in the quarterfinal round when the referee ended the match because Shamrock was injured. He got by Kane in the semifinal round because of outside interference from The Big Show.
He won the final round fair and sqaure after he defeated X-Pac. It may have been considered an upset, but Billy Gunn is the 1999 King Of The Ring.

Edge (shown above) is the 2001 King Of The Ring
Edge faced major challenges throught the 2001 King Of The Ring. He qualified after he defeated Test.
Then at the quarterfinal round, he got by Perry Saturn. Rhyno and Kurt Angle were next.

At the King Of The Ring tournament, he defeated Rhyno in the semifinal round. Then, at the final round, he faced Kurt Angle.

Many fans believed Kurt Angle would repeat and win the 2001 King Of The Ring tournament. However, Edge had different plans. Even though Shane McMahon showed up and got involved, Edge went on to win the 2001 King Of The Ring tournament.
